ISP woes…

This may not concern you if you are not based in Malaysia but thought I’ll share my recent experience with local Internet Service Providers (ISP) after another “harrowing” experience of being disconnected from the rest of the world. Well, in virtual means, that is.

Like most Malaysians without a choice, I have been using TM (used to be Telekom Malaysia)’s Streamyx package that offers unlimited broadband through old and trusty land line wires. When it works, it works fine. Occassionally it might disconnect itself (most likely due to too many subscribers and not enough capacity to handle them) and sometimes it gets back on itself. Having a router is really priceless when you are using Streamyx as you could set it to dial in whenever it loses contact. So far so good….

Then… it went down. This is where the nightmare begins. TM’s customer support is primitive to say the least. They offer you 24/7 unlimited broadband usage but they don’t offer such technical support. If your line goes down on Saturday afternoon, you are SCREWED. Your virtual life can only continue on Monday, that is if they fix it. Yeah, whenever I lodge a report, they’ll inform me to “call back if your line isn’t up 2 days later”. 2 days! In this day and age of instant gratification, they ask you to wait for 2 days! Well I don’t expect 5-minute response time but 24 hours should be okay. But 2 days!

Once I was told my my Streamyx line was causing my phone line to go south. I thus had to lodge 2 reports, one for the phone line and one for Streamyx. Isn’t this ridiculous? It’s the same company! To make matters worse, I was being “played ping pong” with me being the ball, asking me to ask the OTHER party to fix their line first. Man…

Anyway, my problem’s just been resolved. I’m back online again. FOR NOW.

But when the line was down, I searched for an alternative. Man, that will be a longggggg blog.
