How to detect fake websites
Not even a week goes by without me receiving “phishing” emails. You know those emails that are supposedly sent by legit companies like ebay.com or paypal.com purportedly asking you to login to your account etc and then they’ll take your login details and help themselves to your account. Even bank websites are not spared.
I used to get these emails once a month but that was then. These days, it’s more like once per week. So this shows more idiots are on to this.
It used to be so easy to tell whether those are legit sites just looking at the “funny looking” URL but not so these days. Sooner or later, they’ll be so good at it until it’s difficult for us to tell.
So it’s wonderful we have SpoofStick to help us.
This little program is designed as an extenstion to your Internet Explorer (bah!) or Firefox browser. Whenever you click on a “suspect” URL, the program will tell you which site you are really on.
If you think you are on ebay and the program says so, then you are fine. However, if the program says something else, then you better beware.

The alternative, of course, is not to click on any such URL and go to the site directly.
Say you are shown a URL going to some ebay auction. Get the auction ID. Go to ebay.com and enter in this ID.
Yeah, kind of tedious so having SpoofStick helps!
