Tripath has filed for Bankruptcy
So, it’s finally confirmed. We have been reading news about this for months and judging by the reluctance (or refusal) of Tripath’s distributor to supply us certain Tripath chips, it appears that something was definitely amiss.
As you may know, the semiconductor industry is heavy on investment and low on return. A Big semicond player I worked with many years ago was very proud of its 10% Profit From Operation. No wonder I simply prefer the Internet business model.
As a fabless company, you may think that the running cost will be lower but there’s definitely more to running a business other than reducing cost and increasing sales. For sure I’m in no position to speculate why they failed.
It’s a loss to the audio world though as Tripath has done well in bringing high efficiency Class D (Tripath calls it Class T) designs into the audiophile realm. We’ll definitely feel it as our own Charlize uses the excellent sounding TA2020 (imho, still the best sound Tripath chip).
We’ll see how the supply of TA2020 goes and how long more we could sell Charlize. But for sure, we’ll be back with more new products!
In fact, watch out for March. Got a new product coming! Another beauty!
