Some of their baptism of fire was easy, while<br \/>\nsome had a bit more trouble, but overall, no one has yet written to me claiming<br \/>\nthey don&#8217;t like the preamp. Maybe my<\/span> <span>preference for good<br \/>\nsound is quite similar to yours,<\/span> <span>in expecting what a<br \/>\ngood, neutral sound on system<\/span> <span>should have. Or maybe<br \/>\nmy gear should match with this<\/span> <\/span><span><span>kind<br \/>\nof sound.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span>Here I would like to kow tow to you as I<br \/>\npresumed<\/span><span> <span>that u&#8217;ve<br \/>\nprobably tried up quite a number of<\/span> <span>different<br \/>\nvalues\/ config before concluding and<\/span> <span>sharing this<br \/>\nproject with us and other diy&#8217;ers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Initially I thought that this<br \/>\nhumble preamp has&#8217;nt<\/span> <span>reach the full potential yet,<br \/>\nhence the word TWEAK<\/span> <span>comes into my mind. But then,<br \/>\nthose original values<\/span> <span>definately has to stay in<br \/>\norder for me to really enjoy<\/span> <span>all my favourite<br \/>\nalbums\/cd. Of course, there is room<\/span> <span>for improvement,<br \/>\nbut does it really justify the total<\/span> <span>cost of the<br \/>\nproject, or the degree of improvement-<\/span> <span>branded<br \/>\ncoupling caps (hovland, multicaps, etc), black<\/span> <span>gate<br \/>\nskz\/wkz sound of music power caps, dact stepped<\/span> <span>attenuators,<br \/>\npure thicko silver hook up cable, lundahl<\/span> <span>or other<br \/>\nexpensive choke\/ transformer, and much more<\/span> <span>parts.<br \/>\nOk, I might do that when I am very loaded and<\/span> <span>doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\nfeel the pain of thrashing\/ keeping those that<\/span> <\/span><span><span>sound<br \/>\nunsuitable to me.;-)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Remember the 100u+100u, I just took it off<br \/>\nand in<\/span><span> <span>place back<br \/>\nthe 50u+50u. The smoothness, creamy voice<\/span> <span>has came<br \/>\nback, dynamic is a bit slower &#8211; u can get to<\/span> <span>hear<br \/>\nthe singer voice extension very well. The 100u<\/span> <span>might<br \/>\nsound much dynamic with Mohamad Ali punches in<\/span> <span>his<br \/>\nfancy footwork and that of course, will very soon<\/span> <span>send<br \/>\nu to K.O. (definately ngam those ah beng in honda<\/span> <span>civic<br \/>\nwith the windscreen wind down). One words, I<\/span> <span>can&#8217;t<br \/>\ntake it anymore. Out u go. The opposite of<\/span> <span>things<br \/>\nhappen with the 25u+25u, it makes everything<\/span> <\/span><span><span>slow<br \/>\nmotion and dull, lifeless.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Anyway, the 390ohm dubilier has found some<br \/>\nuse in<\/span><span> <span>this<br \/>\npreamp..I put it in the grid resistor for fun and<\/span> <span>suprisingly<br \/>\nit sound much better than the Riken but<\/span> <span>different<br \/>\nvalues that I&#8217;ve tried (100,150,1K). I can<\/span> <span>safely<br \/>\nsaid that this resistor ngam ngam roll off<\/span> <span>those<br \/>\ntiring highs and the loss in sonic clarity is<\/span> <span>negligible.<br \/>\n(of course, it cure my power amp shutdown<\/span> <\/span><span><span>too).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>To summarise, the only difference my circuit<br \/>\nto you<\/span><span> <span>is only<br \/>\nthis grid resistor, 250K ohm alps pot, some<\/span> <span>cheap,<br \/>\nthick solid core copper hookup cable, S$15 per<\/span> <span>pair<br \/>\nbronze female RCA from Well Audio, pair of Welwyn<\/span> <span>20K<br \/>\nfor the plate(well), others is riken (well) and<\/span> <span>1000u<br \/>\ncerafine cathode caps that i found it brings<\/span> <span>more<br \/>\nmid and lower bass than the 470u (who knows I<\/span> <span>might<br \/>\nrevert bacck to 470 in future??;-), and of<\/span> <\/span><span><span>course<br \/>\nthis will varies from system to system.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span> <span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Thanks for your input Waily! Very extended high end with nice firm bass.<br \/>\nA definite improvement over my tube buffer running Mullards.<br \/>\nA greater degree of clarity &amp; depth.<\/span><\/span>Plugged it into my AV amp CD-In as it didn&#8217;t have a Pre-In. My amp<br \/>\ndidn&#8217;t complain &amp; there wasn&#8217;t any complication in regards to gain.<br \/>\nThe 5687 preamp can go very loud but more importantly it goes very clean<br \/>\nas well.<\/p>\n<p>Followed Yeo&#8217;s instructions to a T &#8230; &amp; there was no audible hum or<br \/>\nhiss at all on my Diamond 8.1s. I was initailly worried as I felt my<br \/>\nHammond chassis was a little on the small side.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you guys don&#8217;t mind the shameless plug &#8230; anyone keen on tubes<br \/>\nbut have no idea (like me <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.echoloft.com\/YaBBImages\/cheesy.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" \/>)<br \/>\nshould give this project a try. Can be very cheap to build depending on<br \/>\nyour choice of parts. I will<br \/>\nupgrade it with adding in another choke with FT cap (awaiting your supply).<br \/>\nThe sound was transparent &amp; the mid was good compared with my existing SS<br \/>\npreamp. Source from Marantz CD6000OSE, 5687 preamp, JVC 4-channel power amp<br \/>\n&amp; out from Revolver floor standing speaker. I would expect better sound with<br \/>\nadditional 10H choke &amp; FT cap. The holes beside the transformer &amp; choke are<br \/>\nfor this purposes. The look that matches the<br \/>\nsound.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Look :<br \/>\nThose cabinet handles makes it look very cool. The<br \/>\nchokes, I sprayed black to match the chasis. The blue<br \/>\nlight makes it very high end.<\/p>\n<p>The Sound :<br \/>\nFirst, I was bothered about the hummm although it<br \/>\ncan&#8217;t be heard when listening. It did improved when I<br \/>\ndid the star gounding.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s true that this machine is very dynamic and fast.<br \/>\nThe vocal is also great after changing the cathode cap<br \/>\nto 1000uF (thanks to Wally for this). The extension of<br \/>\nthe highs are amazing. There are a lot of little<br \/>\nsounds that brings out with this preamp.<\/p>\n<p>Further Improvements :<br \/>\nI know there still a lot of room for improvement like<br \/>\nfinding the right value for the grid resistor, DC<br \/>\nfilament supply, trying tung-sol 5687 etc&#8230;<br \/>\nThanks man for all your help..
