{"id":284,"date":"2011-02-21T05:59:17","date_gmt":"2011-02-20T21:59:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/wordpress63\/?p=284"},"modified":"2013-03-31T05:15:58","modified_gmt":"2013-03-30T21:15:58","slug":"beyonce-in-a-threesome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/beyonce-in-a-threesome\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyonce in a Threesome?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hmm&#8230; Who wouldn&#8217;t want to engage Beyonce in a threesome? \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Wink\" alt=\"Wink\" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/emotions\/img\/smiley-wink.gif\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though I&#8217;m a single full range driver fan, I&#8217;m okay with the other camp of using active crossover and multi way speaker drivers. \u00a0Different path, same goal.<\/p>\n<p>With single driver, we have simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>With multi drivers, we seek control.<\/p>\n<p>Most likely you&#8217;ll be using tweeters, mids and woofers from different manufacturers with different specifications, particularly sensitivity. And the key to integrating all these drivers singing is a crossover system.<\/p>\n<p>Active crossovers like the Behringer DCX2496 does this particularly well. With a touch of a few buttons, you could choose your crossover type, slope <em>and<\/em> equalize the gain of your filters to match the drivers you are using. Great stuff indeed!<\/p>\n<p>But what if you are a fussy pot who prefers everything done in the analog domain?<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps you need larger gain than available from your active crossover?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enter Beyonce!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though Beyonce is designed as a stereo preamp, Beyonce2 controls volume of 3 stereo sets, albeit all with same gain. So some engineering hard work is required to modify her to have 3 stereo sets of independent gain.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an implementation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/img\/3-way-beyoncea.jpg\" width=\"90%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/img\/3-way-beyonceb.jpg\" width=\"90%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/img\/3-way-beyoncec.jpg\" width=\"90%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some hardware modification and A LOT of engineering on the software later, we have a fully functional 6 channel (3 stereo sets) preamp with digital gain control and 3 sets of gain.<\/p>\n<p>For simplicity, the 3 sets are named A, B and C. Of course, if you desire more than this, let me know!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"beyonce map\" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/img\/beyonce_map.gif\" width=\"90%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Integrating the offset control into the Apple remote control is quite a task. To access the Offset Menu, press <strong>&gt;&gt;|<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"remote control main menu \" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/img\/beyonce_mainmenu.gif\" width=\"90%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the controls within the Offset Menu. As you can see here, gain and attenuation for each stereo set could be configured for -12dB to +12dB. As we only have 2 characters to display this info, 10, 11 and 12 are displayed as <strong>A<\/strong>, <strong>B<\/strong> and <strong>C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Upon power up, we start off with Mute which is -96dB. If you press &#8220;<strong>+<\/strong>&#8221; to increase volume, master volume starts at -36dB.<\/p>\n<p>So if<\/p>\n<p>A is set to <strong>n3<\/strong>, B set to <strong>P5<\/strong> and C set to <strong>nA<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p>this means<\/p>\n<p>A is programmed for <strong>-39dB<\/strong>, B is <strong>-31dB<\/strong> and C is set to <strong>-46dB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"beyonce offset menu\" src=\"http:\/\/diyparadise.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/img\/beyonce_offsetmenu.gif\" width=\"90%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every incremental step corresponds to 1dB in gain\/attenuation. If you desire greater control than this, let me know. The chip could be configured for 0.5dB increment. There&#8217;ll be more programming of course.<\/p>\n<p>Note that you could also save your settings by accessing menu <strong>SS<\/strong> (for Save). Settings will be saved via the onboard EEPROM of the micro-controller. <strong>88<\/strong> will be displayed and blink twice during writing.<\/p>\n<p>Upon power up, you have this new setting! Until the next time you rewrite it, of course.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So now, do you fancy Beyonce?
